One of the biggest mistakes when teaching beginner Spanish is introducing too much vocabulary at once. Instead, start with phrases students can actually use. When children can greet someone, ask for help, or say «thank you» in Spanish, they immediately feel successful—and that confidence makes them excited to keep learning. Today I’ll show you a simple Survival Spanish lesson that works beautifully with elementary students.
Start with Greetings
Greetings are the perfect place to begin. Instead of memorizing vocabulary, students immediately practice speaking with classmates. Simple expressions like:

Add Polite Expressions
After greetings, I like introducing polite expressions. These are phrases students can use every single day in class. They also encourage respectful classroom communication while building vocabulary naturally.
Practice Through Games
Children remember Spanish much better when they’re moving, speaking, and playing. Instead of drilling vocabulary, turn practice into a game.
Bingo is one of my students’ favorite activities. They practice listening carefully while reviewing useful Spanish phrases in a fun and engaging way.
This simple activity encourages partner conversations and helps students repeat the target phrases naturally through play.
